What are the best teeth whitening options?

Teeth whitening is an area of cosmetic dentistry rapidly growing in popularity. Why? It’s relatively cheap and can produce instant results.

As you might have guessed, the rise in demand has caused a rise in the product. Unfortunately, all teeth whitening products do not guarantee the same quality results.

The first question that usually arises is ‘how much?’ The problem with this question is that there is no straightforward answer.

The more important questions should be –

  • Does it work?
  • Is it safe?
  • When can I expect results?

Teeth whitening treatments come in all shapes, sizes, costs and quality. To determine which teeth whitening products are the best, it’s important to first understand the how’s and why’s.

Why would someone want to get their teeth whitened?

Our teeth have a protective enamel layer. This layer protects our teeth from the harmful staining stuff we put in our mouths. Over time, another layer accumulates on top of the enamel, this layer generally builds up over time and becomes hard to remove by brushing or even with a visit to the dentist.

How teeth whitening works

While this foreign layer is not necessarily dangerous, it manages to work its way through the enamel into the small blemishes of the tooth, leaving them a few shades dull of their natural colour.

This is where a teeth whitening procedure comes into play. The bleaching agent is able to work its way down into the tooth enamel and break down the staining. Most whitening processes will combine two chemical agents – one that works to break down the staining, and another that whitens the teeth.

What are the popular teeth whitening options?

In broad terms, teeth whitening can be:

  • Professional in-house dental whitening, or
  • At home teeth whitening kits

Having your teeth professionally whitened will be the more expensive of the two options, but it will provide guaranteed professional results in as little as an hour. A take home kit can still provide good results (provided you receive a whitening kit from a dental professional), but it will generally require a number of at-home applications over a longer period of time to achieve the same results.

It’s important to take into account a number of personal factors –

  • What results am I expecting?
  • What is my time frame?
  • How much am I willing to spend?
